Event: Animation at The Pitt - 4th Nov, Edinburgh

Come along to an outdoor evening of food, cake, films and friends with the Edinburgh College of Art's Animation Department.

31st October 2016

Abigail Lamb, a Final Year Animation student at Edinburgh College of Art, tells us about the event herself and her coursemates have organised to bring you an evening of food, film and fun. The evening includes animations created by past and present students, delicious food provided by local food trucks and bakeries, and even a few braziers to keep you toasty.

So tell us; what, where, when and who?
The event is mainly an Animation showcase which takes place under open air, at night, in a bit of an unusual Edinburgh venue. It's a place in Trinity called The Pitt. The event is on between 6pm and 10pm on Friday the 4th November for just the one night. It's a collaborative effort between a lot of ECA's Animation Department, past and present. It'll showcase a lot of the work we've been making over the past few years.

Why did the Animation Department decide to set up this event?
I originally thought up the idea during our third year when our year group was looking at putting on a screening or exhibition of our work. Unfortunately, my plan didn’t come to fruition at the time but was liked enough by my coursemates that we kept it in mind and this year I'm finally getting a chance to do it.

What can your guests expect from the films that will be shown? Are they part of your final year programme or more of a 'just for fun' thing?
The one thing that you can definitely expect from our screenings is that you can’t go in with any expectations at all. We are a very unusual bunch and there are virtually no consistencies between our work. Some of us are 3D animators, some of us are stop motion animators, some of us 2D hand drawn or digital. But we are all gifted storytellers and we can all tell you a story that you'll love. So I suppose our audience can expect to be well and truly entertained.

And there might be snippets in there of things to come…

Why did you choose The Pitt as your location? How do you think it'll lend itself to an animation screening?
The Pitt initially really appealed to me after I visited last Christmas. The energy was electric and the atmosphere was magical. It’s the same kind of buzz you get with film, and it seemed such a missed opportunity not to bring them together. Not to mention that open air cinemas have really regained their popularity in the UK recently; they're an experience I just love, and think others will too.

Finally, is it ticketed, and where can eager guests-to-be book their tickets?
It is ticketed but tickets are free and available on Eventbrite. Though rest assured we won’t be turning anyone away at the door on Friday!

Whilst trawling through the internet looking high and low for any and all opportunities, I often caught mys…
